Still life painting
Still life painting is as i already have mentioned a depiction of dead things. It is
kind of strange this combination of the words still and life when it is supposed
to mean depiction of dead things. To me the word "still" combined whith the
word "life" would mean something like, not dead at all, or still alive. It still has
life the thing that is laying there so still.
Maybe the artist or who it was that first used the word "still life" was thinking
about what he was trying to do when painting dead things, to give them life in
the painting. I remember the famous artist from Norway Odd Nerdrum talked
about one of his painting that was a still life painting depicting a bread. He then
said that he had tried to paint the bread as if it was a man with a soul.
The still life painting above i had fun doing. It is about balance. When i photographed
this composition, the elements of fruit and vegetables almost fall together.
It is a pity that still life painting is not very popular among buyers in our generation.
Maybe it is because it need very little effort to paint a still life painting. You can sit
in your studio and complete the painting without even going out. And the things that
you are depicting is not always interesting to the potential artbuyer.If the artist starts
to depict interesting things i think it might be a success.
