Original paintings

I work in the national museum of art in Norway. Actually it is called the national gallery. Often people asks me: are all the paintings original? Original paintings in the national gallery? well ofcourse they are all original paintings.

But then we have an artist like Edvard Munch in our gallery. And as you maybe know, he painted often several variations of his favorite paintings.
So it is kind of understandable that people with no education in art might wonder about which of his paintings is the original. They are ofcourse all originals, but one of them was the first one, but not more of an original because of that.

Nowadays it is possible to copy paintings in a way that makes it look almost identically as the painted original. I think it is called "Giclèe". I have not tried that yet, so all my paintings are original paintings.

Oil paintings on canvas

When i first started to paint i painted on canvas or something cheaper. I have
always considered the price buying art equipment. So therefore i used to buy
one of the cheapest canvases that was only good enough for my purpose.

For the last years i have not painted on canvas. I have instead painted on a
wooden plate or what you might call it. The important thing to me is that this
plate is a lot more solid than canvas. If i like i can work roughly on this plate
without being afraid of that it will get damaged. The wood plate is possible
to buy in different thicknesses, but i like to use the one that is about one cm
thick.

I guess i will paint on this kind of plate in the future, but if the customers
like canvas paintings better, i will ofcourse consider changing back to canvas.
